Daniel 3:17-18 If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.
This is one of those passages that should really speak to our “selfish, spiritual, self interest!” For years as I read this passage I reveled in the faith of these three men. They said, Our God is able to deliver us and He will!
I thought that was great and then God did deliver them. Then over the years of life and ministry I noticed that God doesn’t always deliver! He is able but He may choose not to. Then the question came; am I willing to love and serve Him even if it means that I may apparently lose out. Maybe God will not come through for me.
I had always seemed to focus on the times that God gave victory. His people always seemed to have every thing work out for them. Then I noticed everything didn’t always work out for me. I thought maybe something was wrong with me. Maybe God isn’t pleased with me. Maybe I am doing something wrong.
But did you catch it? They said our God is able and He will but if He doesn’t we still will do what is right.
Do you have a “but if not!” love for God? Are you willing to serve God even if He takes you through very rough places in your life? Is your love for Him conditioned on Him always working things out the way you think would be best?
How selfish and self serving is our spiritual life? How much do we want to use God for our purposes?
Do you realize that He allowed Naboth to be killed? I read the story and keep waiting on God to come to the rescue but He doesn’t! 1Kings 21:1-19
He allowed John the Baptist to have his head cut off even though he was a very faithful servant! Matthew 14:8-12
He allowed James to be run through with a sword. Acts 12:1-2
That ought to be enough to make you realize this truth. God will not always come to the rescue. He will not always get you out of the problem like you want Him to. Do you love Him like He is no matter what He does?
Can you and will you say-I will serve God, He can do what He wants, He could rescue me because it is within His power and He will but if He doesn’t, don’t worry I still will serve Him.
But if not!
