Jeremiah 9:8 Their tongue is as an arrow shot out; it speaketh deceit: one speaketh peaceably to his neighbour with his mouth, but in heart he layeth his wait.
We should be people of integrity. We should speak the truth in our heart. Psalm 15:2 Jeremiah was tired of the way Israel, God’s people, were living. They were a group of lying people, committing adultery, seeking out sin, and living to do wrong. He wanted to run away from them. Jeremiah 9:1-8
He warns his readers not to trust anyone. Don’t trust your neighbor or your brother. They are all trying to take advantage of you. They are all using slander. Jeremiah 9:4
He said that they wearied themselves to do evil. They taught their tongues to lie Jeremiah 9:5
They lived in deceit. Jeremiah 9:6
Then comes our text verse to really set it off. They talk well to you but they are just waiting for you to say or do something that they can use against you.
I have experienced this many times in the ministry. I am afraid that many in the Baptist church have allowed these sins of lying, slander, and deceit to be part of our culture. No wonder lost people have a hard time trusting us.
We shoot and kill each other with a vengeance. Others may fight over doctrine but we love to fight over personalities and pet peeves that have no Biblical basis.
We get together to talk to hear what the other says so that we have evidence and weapons for gossip and slander.
God deliver us from this. What happened to they will know we are His disciples because we love one another John 13:35
The forgiven forgive! Colossians 3:13 That is a little saying I picked up along the way. If there is any truth there then the question is, why don’t you forgive?
I challenge my readers, Vision, and my friends. Let’s be real. Let’s get rid of this deceit and trying to find ways to slander. I like Jeremiah sometimes want to just run away to a place where there is truth and love and God’s people are seeking Him rather than trying to devour one another.
