Who is doing the work?

May 9, 2009 By Austin Gardner Leave a Comment

Isaiah 10:15 Shall the axe boast itself against him that heweth therewith? or shall the saw magnify itself against him that shaketh it? as if the rod should shake itself against them that lift it up, or as if the staff should lift up itself, as if it were no wood.

Sometimes we think that we are doing the work of God. We begin to look at the tree as it falls or the woodpile as it stacks up and think; look what I have done. God asks in this verse should the axe boast against the one that is using it. The saw is a tool and shouldn’t magnify itself or think so highly of itself. It is but a tool

God has allowed me to preach His Word in many places. I have seen many people get saved and lives changed. Does that make me something? This verse says basically, who do you think you are? You are just a tool in the hands of the master. He used you. He did something. You got to be part of it but you didn’t do it.

That takes me to two thoughts that I deal with and problems that I face. When I do not seem to be accomplishing much I think that I am not sawing, chopping or moving well. I begin to beat myself up. I have a major problem with this. Yet I must remember that I am but a tool in the hands of the master.

I have seen great days and then I have been known to lift myself up and think that I did something but all along I am just a tool.

Have you ever dealt with this problem or am I the only one? I do have major problems with it. I think well I need to sharpen the axe or the saw. I need to be more flexible in the hands of the master.

Many times I am too man centered. I am too Austin centered. I confess that sin and hope you will do the same. God you are doing the work and we recognize you and magnify you.
