Psalm 94:17-19 Unless the LORD had been my help, my soul had almost dwelt in silence. When I said, My foot slippeth; thy mercy, O LORD, held me up. In the multitude of my thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul.
The psalmist tells us that he was almost gone! His foot was slipping, his soul was almost in silence but then something happened. He had tons of thoughts running through his mind. In his frustration and frenzy something happened. God’s comforts, His promises delighted his soul. It was the Lord’s mercy that caused the psalmist to think on right things.
You know how thoughts compete for your attention. You know how they come in like a flood and scare you senseless. You know how it can get so bad that you do not know how you can continue on. If you are honest you have had your moments. Times when you were at the limit and couldn’t take any more. What are you to do?
The psalmist says that while he was thinking that God’s comforts delighted his soul. In Philippians 4:6-8 we get a picture of what we are to do. First, we rejoice in the Lord and not other things or people. Philippians 4:4. Second we keep our mind stayed on Him or in other words constantly think about the Lord Jesus, who He is and what He has done for us! Isaiah 26:3
I fear that the big mistake we make is to allow the cares of this world to choke out the work of God and His Word in our lives! Matthew 13:22. We think and think about our problems. We consider what is going to happen and what might not happen. We worry about the economy and the competition. We worry about the future.
It doesn’t take long until we are slipping. We work longer hours. We stress ourselves out because if it gets done it will have to be us that gets it done. We give everything we have and sacrifice all that is important to us to gain something that we will lose. Ecclesiastes 2:18-19
Could it be time for you to run to the Word of God and find His promises? Could it be time for you to focus on what He says and take some time out of your busy schedule for Him? Could it be possible that you need to learn to think on the right things?
