2Chronicles 5:12-14 Also the Levites which were the singers, all of them of Asaph, of Heman, of Jeduthun, with their sons and their brethren, being arrayed in white linen, having cymbals and psalteries and harps, stood at the east end of the altar, and with them an hundred and twenty priests sounding with trumpets) It came even to pass, as the trumpeters and singers were as one, to make one sound to be heard in praising and thanking the LORD; and when they lifted up their voice with the trumpets and cymbals and instruments of musick, and praised the LORD, saying, For he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever: that then the house was filled with a cloud, even the house of the LORD; So that the priests could not stand to minister by reason of the cloud: for the glory of the LORD had filled the house of God.
I am constantly asked about music and here I come across it in my devotions today! Could you just look over some of the truths that seem to be found in this passage.
The musicians here were Levites! Those were the men of God, dedicated to serving and worshipping. This was their full time job, so obviously the music was very important to God.
They wore “white linen!” This was the same clothing that the priests and men who led the worship services were wearing! He makes mention of their clothing so that must give that some importance. The clothes that they wore were the symbol of salvation, of having been forgiven. 1Chronicles 15:27; Revelation 15:6, Revelation 19:8
They used several types of instruments, cymbals, the psaltery or a type of harp, a different harp-different shape and number of strings, trumpets, and other instruments of music. What ever instrument you are able to play well could be used to worship God.
Notice that they sang and played as one. That means there was harmony, unity, purpose, practice and any number of other things that we might notice about the fact that so many people could be singing and playing as one.
The message of the song was so strong that it was clear and obvious what they were saying. They were praising and thanking God in their song. Any music that we use should give a clear message. The message should be something that would glorify God.
Notice that God enjoyed or blessed their music so much that He moved in to such a degree that they had to move out. He filled the room.
There are many lessons here. I hope you will really meditate on them. The music is so important in our church. We need singers, a choir, musicians, etc. They need to be men and women of God. They need to know what their purpose is when they come to the service.
I want to see God so fill our place that we have no room for us and it is all Him. Will you get involved in music that will honor, praise, bless, and worship God?
