2Kings 24:9 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his father had done.
What an influence we have as parents! Here Jehoiachin was only 18 years old. He begins to reign. He does evil. His kingdom will come to an end and go into captivity.
The thing that I would like to ask you to notice is that he did evil. Not what was necessarily evil in the eyes of his people or culture but in the eyes of the Lord. Have you come to the point in your spiritual life that you realize it is not a matter of your opinion but His? Have you realize you nor your people decide what is right or wrong but God does? He did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord. God has His standard. That is what is right or wrong.
But more importantly in this verse is that he is doing what he saw his dad do. He is doing according to how he was taught. This is a sad commentary. This man and all who follow him will suffer because he is doing what he saw his dad do and teach.
That brings us to the real question. What are we teaching our children by our example and by our words? Will your children learn to love God by watching you and following your example? Will they be faithful to church and to obey God based on what they have learned from you?
I would hate to think that my children and my grandchildren would suffer because of what they learned from me. I would hate to think that my children would lead others into harm based on what they learned from me.
Dads and moms, let’s decide to set a good example. Look to every step and move to be sure that God will be praised by what your children learn from you.
Regardless, they will do according to what you do so be careful with what you do!
