2Kings 13:19 And the man of God was wroth with him, and said, Thou shouldest have smitten five or six times; then hadst thou smitten Syria till thou hadst consumed it: whereas now thou shalt smite Syria but thrice.
Joash, the king of Israel, comes to see Elisha because he needs to see God really do something big. He is desperate. He loves Elisha who is dying and falls on him crying and hugging him. Elisha and Joash grab a bow and shoot an arrow out the window and then Elisha tells Joash to grab some arrows and strike the floor.
Joash strikes the floor with the arrows only three times. Elisha gets angry. He says, “if you had struck the floor five or six times you would have had total victory but since you were halfhearted you will get a half hearted, partial victory!”
That is sad. The answer is right there in front of you. It is in your hands. All you have to do is be excited about it when you pray. All you have to do is believe, really believe. When you are told to strike the arrows on the ground all you have to do is do so with enthusiasm.
Somehow Joash doesn’t get that excited. Maybe he thinks Elisha is old and dying. Maybe he thinks that kings don’t do something that foolish. I do not know what he thought but I do know that he missed it.
Now to us. How many times is God on ready to do something but we lack the excitement and enthusiasm to believe that God is going to do something. We halfheartedly pray. We halfheartedly talk about what God is doing. We don’t really believe.
I have been very guilty. I get in the rut of doing things. I get used to the attendance, the preaching, the singing and do not expect great things. We need to have and to create an atmosphere of excitement and expectancy. Not because of who we are but because of who He is and what He is going to do.
Could it be that you are hindering what God wants to do because you do not really believe and really get excited about what He is doing. Grab those arrows. Strike the ground and do not stop until you have hit the ground 5 or 6 times.
I am excited about Vision. I am excited about what God is doing in our church. I am excited about how many missionaries are being sent out. I believe that God is using us and is going to do much greater things. I believe that He has great plans for a great future for Vision.
