1Kings 21:2-3 And Ahab spake unto Naboth, saying, Give me thy vineyard, that I may have it for a garden of herbs, because it is near unto my house: and I will give thee for it a better vineyard than it; or, if it seem good to thee, I will give thee the worth of it in money. And Naboth said to Ahab, The LORD forbid it me, that I should give the inheritance of my fathers unto thee.
The story may be somewhat familiar to you. Ahab the king wants a vineyard that Naboth owns. Jewish people are not to sell their inheritance. That is their culture, their law, their practice. Ahab knows that but lives in the pragmatic world of whatever works.
Ahab figures that everything has a price. He offers Naboth a more than reasonable price. He offers him a better vineyard or its worth in money etc. Naboth’s answer is, God forbid. You know that I am not supposed to sell the inheritance of my fathers.
That brings us to the question of the day. What do you have that is not for sale? For the right amount of money we will completely drop out of church, neglect our spouse and children! For the right amount of money we may participate in activities that we know are not right. At first we feel wrong but then the money kicks in and we accept it!
It may not be money that causes us to sell out. How about church growth, is that reason enough to sell out? How about being popular, is that reason enough to do what you know you shouldn’t do? Are friendships more important than truth? Does looking intelligent and cool trump the truth? Does being a success make it worth forgetting some fundamental truths?
We really need to sit down and decide what is so important that we will not put it up for sale. The Bible is the inerrant Word of God! Salvation is purely by grace without any human merit! Baptism and the Lord’s Supper in no way add to or give points with God! The church is a local body of called out baptized believers that have organized themselves to carry out the Great Commission! The church is to go and bring not for them to come and hear!
Not sure what all should be on the list but this much I know-we better have somethings that are not for sale!
