Play the man!

2Samuel 10:12 Be of good courage, and let us play the men for our people, and for the cities of our God: and the LORD do that which seemeth him good.

In the story Joab and his men are in trouble. The enemy is on every side. They are stronger than God’s people. Joab is not sure how the battle will turn out. He divides his army. Half are with his brother and half with him. What will happen? Will they be defeated or will they win the victory? Read the entire story to see how it turns out. 2Samuel 10:1-19

The point for this devotion is that you will often find yourself in situations that are beyond you. They will be more than you can handle and more than you can deal with. You will not be able to see a solution. It might seem that you are at the end of your rope, between the rock and the hard place. The Peruvians used to say that you could find yourself between the sword and the wall. Are you there? If you are can we find any instruction from this verse?

First thing is to be of good courage. Though things look desperate you are not to lose hope. You are to believe in God. You are to believe that God works all things out for your best. Romans 8:28-29. You are to know that God can and will provide a way of escape from every temptation and every testing 1Corinthians 10:13. You are to rejoice in the Lord and not in your circumstances Habakkuk 3:17-19. You can be encouraged because you have been commanded to take your petitions to the Lord, make them known and then give thanks because you know that God is going to answer. Philippians 4:6-8

Secondly, you are to get up and go act like a man. Step out by faith knowing that God will work. Hebrews 11:6. You can only believe and then act. That is all that is within your power. Joab says ok guys! Be of good courage! Trust God. Then he says all we can do is get up and do what is right regardless of the situation. You do not know what is going to happen but in this point that is not the point. You are to do what you should do regardless. Don’t be worried about what is going to happen. Just get up and act like it is going to work out. Just reckon it to be so Romans 6:11

Now that you have decided to just be happy with what God is going to do and then you have stepped out to act like a man all you can do is trust God. Let God do what seems good to Him no matter what it is. He may give us the victory. He may not! Which ever that is not my decision. My decision is to trust Him, to do what I should do and to leave the rest to Him.

It takes a pretty tough person to do this. That is what the term is “Play the man!” Be strong, be valiant, act courageously! Play the man!

Many times all you can do is “Play the man!“ You are between the sword and the wall. Where can you turn? Just trust God, do what you can and leave the rest to God!
