Joshua 18:3 And Joshua said unto the children of Israel, How long are ye slack to go to possess the land, which the LORD God of your fathers hath given you?
The nation of Israel has now inhabited the Promised Land. Five tribes are doing pretty good at taking possession of what God has given them. One tribe is complaining that they need more room when they have not yet worked at taking over what is already theirs. Joshua 17:14-18
Now Joshua addresses seven tribes that have not yet received their inheritance. Notice what he says to them. This is important for us as we view the same truth about us as New Testament Christians.
You are the slack ones. You are the ones that are lazy. You are not taking advantage of what God has given you. You are the disobedient ones. You could have all that He has given you but rather you are slack. How long are you too weak to just go get what is yours?
God has already given you this land. It is yours for the taking. You have the promise of God on that. He promised you that He would get you across the Jordan River and He did. He promised you victory over your enemies and He has. He has promised you so much and lived up to every promise so what is the problem? Why are you not enjoying what He has prepared for you?
What is the application for us today? God has given us exceeding and great promises 2Peter 1:4. We are new creatures 2Corinthians 5:17. He has come to give us abundant life John 10:10. He has unbelievable things prepared for us 1Corinthians 2:9. There are many more verses and promises that could be seen. It is obvious that He has done all for us to enjoy the abundant, victorious life. Yet here we sit living half in and half out Christian lives.
You can have victory over your past. You can have victory over sin. You can have victory in your thought life. You can have victory in your family. It is all yours if you will but seek Him and obey Him.
How long will you be to lazy too step up and take what He has given you? Maybe the reason you do not enjoy all that He has for you is that you do not understand that it is yours by faith and grace just like salvation.
Some get saved and fall from grace Galatians 5:4. That doesn’t mean that you have lost your salvation but rather that you are ignoring the power of God to live the life that He gave you. Grace got you saved and grace is how you live the life that He has for you. Some say that the Christian life is too hard to live. They are wrong. It is impossible to live in the power of one’s self. We need the power and grace of God!
Are you so foolish as to think that you can live in the Christian life in your own power and ability Galatians 3:1-3. There is way too much here for such a short devotional but all you need to do is know and believe the truths that the Bible says about you and your relationship to Christ, act like they are true, yield your life to Him and He will do the work in you. Romans 6.
Let’s step forward, learn all we can, live up to and enjoy what God has done for us!
