Prayers can’t get through the ceiling?

Deuteronomy 28:23  And the heavens over your head shall be bronze, and the earth under you shall be iron.

Have you ever felt like your prayers didn’t make it past the ceiling? That is exactly what God said He was going to do with the nation of Israel along with a lot of other punishments in this passage. Deuteronomy 28:12-45.

God had been making them promises. Basically if you will obey Me, honor Me, and follow Me I will do all these great things to you as a country. Then He gives this very harsh threat. If you will not listen to the voice of the Lord your God to obey whatever He tells you then these curses are coming on you! Deuteronomy 28:15

Then comes this verse, I will turn the heavens above to bronze so your prayers do not get through and the earth underneath you will be iron so that it does not produce for you. This is a horrible curse. We need God. We need to realize that God hears and answers prayer. We need to know that talking to Him does make a difference.

Have you ever felt like it didn’t make any difference when you prayed? I have. Have you ever felt like God wasn’t listening to anything that you had to say? I have. Have you ever wanted to give up on praying and just figure things are going to be like things are going to be? I have.

But I was wrong and so are you. God commands us to pray. We are to ask Him for things that we need. James 4:2. We are to go to Him with every worry and anxiety. Philippians 4:6. We should never give up on praying. Luke 18:1.

The problem is that we pray with the wrong attitude. Like the Israelites we are living in open disobedience and still wanting God to hear and answer our prayers. He has clearly said right here that He will not do that.

We want to pray like as though He ought to answer our prayers and go to Him as though he were a genie in a bottle that we can call forth and command. He is not!

Jesus taught us how to pray. He said that we were to go to Him as God in Heaven, above us, all holy, and supreme. Matthew 6:9-13

He taught us that we were to pray acknowledging that He is king, He rules, He decides.

He taught us to pray wanting to obey Him here on earth like we would if we were there in Heaven.

He taught us to acknowledge our relationship to Him as Ruler, King, Decision maker before we ever asked for anything for ourselves.

We could then ask for our selves, our daily needs, His direction so that we would do what pleases Him, His protection, etc.

We are then to go back in prayer remembering that it is all for His kingdom, power, honor!

That changes prayer. Has it felt like a worthless exercise. Can I suggest you take into account the truths of this devotional and pray again. He is a God that hears and answers prayer.

But obedience, respect, honor, and glory to Him open the doors of Heaven. Selfishness, self seeking, disobedience, doing it my way, close up the Heavens like bronze and cause God not to hear.
