I was asked this question in a recent email and thought I would send you the brief, quick answer that I sent out! This might cause quite the storm on each side of the issue, but here is the answer that I gave:
The Bible does not say that it is clearly wrong to drink a glass of wine. But there are several things to be considered
I will give you several verses and leave it at that
First I believe that once we are saved we do not live by a list of rules.
1Co 6:12 All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.
All things can be done but they may not be expedient or the best thing to do and for sure I want to not be brought under the power of anything that I might do. That is one of my major reasons to have never taken a drink. Too many people can not handle alcohol and become alcoholics. I do not want to be one of them and I do not want to make others think that I take it so lightly and then drink and fall.
1Co 10:23 All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.
1Co 10:24 Let no man seek his own, but every man another’s wealth.
Again all things can be done but that does not mean it is best because it might not edify or build up and encourage others. My goal in life is to be to seek the wealth of others and not my own.
Pro 20:1 Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.
I do know that wine will make a fool out of person any way that it can and that many have sure been deceived by wine
Pro 23:29 Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?
Pro 23:30 They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.
I know that drunkenness is clearly condemned in the Bible and will give more verses on this subject but drinking a lot sure causes wounds for no reason.
Pro 23:31 Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright.
Pro 23:32 At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.
Wine will bite you before it is over
Pro 23:33 Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things.
Pro 23:34 Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.
Pro 23:35 They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.
Some how wine will hurt people and they will wake up and go back to it again
Pro 23:20 Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh:
Those that are big drinkers and wild partyers should not be our company
Isa 28:7 But they also have erred through wine, and through strong drink are out of the way; the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink, they are swallowed up of wine, they are out of the way through strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble in judgment.
Drinking causes people to make big mistakes even though they are big leaders
1Co 6:9 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,
1Co 6:10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.
Drunkards will not go to heaven-that is a pretty strong condemnation of being a drunkard
Rom 14:21 It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak
I would say that many people can not handle their alcohol and due to our example they might drink and cause great harm to themselves so I might be making people fall.
Rom 15:2 Let every one of us please his neighbour for his good to edification.
This verse just adds to the above verse
