Colossians 2:20-23 Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances, (Touch not; taste not; handle not; Which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments and doctrines of men? Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body; not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh.
Our spiritual life is lived out because of our relationship with Jesus Christ. It is Christ in us the hope of glory. We do not live holy lives because we follow rules. Read carefully this passage:
We were dead but we are now alive and forgiven. Colossians 2:13
He has canceled our debt by nailing it to the cross. Colossians 2:14
We are not judged by what we do or do not do! Colossians 2:17
We are to hold on to Jesus who is our head. He feeds us, grows us, to be what He made us. We are new creatures. Colossians 2:19
With Jesus Christ we died to the rudiments or the stuff of this world so why is it that we think we please Him by obeying rules even if the rules are religious. Colossians 2:20-21
Sometimes it seems we are trying to change by following rules. We think that by being hard on ourselves we can change but we do not need to change, we are new creatures. There was nothing of redeeming value in us before He saved us. When He saved us He didn’t change us, He made us new 2Corinthians 5:17
You are a new creature, so live out who you are. As a new born Christian you do not want to live that old life. The Holy Spirit is at work in you. Just listen to Him and obey Him because you love Him, you want to obey, it is who you are!
