My Comfort is more important!

Jonah 4:9 And God said to Jonah, Doest thou well to be angry for the gourd? And he said, I do well to be angry, even unto death.

God has sent Jonah to preach to the city of Nineveh. God has worked and the people have repented. Jonah is not happy about it at all. He reminds God that the reason he did not want to go and preach was that though God had sent a threat Jonah knew that God would be merciful.

What a good God! How poorly we know Him today! Jonah knew before he ever went to Nineveh that God was so good and kind that they would repent and be forgiven. Jonah 4:2 Is that what you would have thought of our God?

Do you pray wondering how hard He is? Do you imagine that He doesn’t want to hear you and answer your prayers?

God has to teach Jonah a lesson so He causes a gourd to grow up. Jonah is so happy. Then God sends a worm to take the gourd out. Jonah is so angry.

God asks Jonah if it was right that he was so concerned for a gourd and that God shouldn’t be concerned about the souls of men and women.

Jonah angrily answers and says that he is right. He feels like he can be extremely angry because he lost the gourd. I know that everyone reading the book of Jonah or this devotional is going to think that Jonah was crazy. He shouldn’t have gotten that upset about something as simple as a gourd.

Yet we live our lives much the same way. God would have us give or go and serve Him and the first thing we think of is our comfort. What about me is our question. What is going to happen to my family? How are we going to live?

Our comfort is so important to us that it often far supersedes the will of God for our lives.

So here comes the question. Do you do well to be angry for the loss of your comfort? Is it right that you should make decisions, spiritual decisions, based on how they are going to affect your comfort?

Is my comfort more important to me than even the will of God?
